Today we have been given our Advanced Photographic Practise brief which came at a pleasant surprise. The brief allows us to use video and audio and is about developing our skills in such areas. I have played with both video and audio in the past in high school media, but i assume by now the software we were using is outdated and also I'm not sure i can remember much , so this is a brilliant opportunity to learn something fresh from scratch. Which is always a bonus.
Module aims
. Independent Project development
.Concepts of photography as a post modern practise
.Developing an awareness of critical texts
Theme
We have been given the theme 'Point of view' to inspire our videos. This can mean virtually anything in my opinion whether it be a physical point of view or person thoughts point of view ect . The final piece deliverable has to be between 30-180 seconds , having played with video before i know that although doesn't sound a long time it really is and the editing work is very time consuming. So i think this an amazing opportunity to work on my time keeping skill and organisation which in the past i can say are some of my weaknesses.
In lesson Video Research
Chris Marker "La Jetee" 1962
La jetee is a french science fiction film created in 1962. Its based around the aftermath of world war 3 and experimentation with the survivors. It is filmed in black and white and consists of mainly stills. From the moment it played i was absorbed by the abstract concept , dark photography and voice talking over the images. Although they are images Chris Marker has cleverly zoomed in and out and panned across the images to give the illusion of it moving. Although a complex concept it is executed quite simply but more than enticing. It is a narrative that takes you through the video provoking future thought, grabbing the audiences attention into anticipation as to what will happen to the lead next .
Dexter Titles
An extremely clever short piece of film used as the titles for the U.S based series. The close ups of knives , dental floss , show laces ,coffee filters and much more are dark ,sickening and thought prevoking when yet in actual fact its just following a mans normal morning routine. I think although the dark underlining themes of watching a serial killer have his morning shave the sequence of events is playful and colourful. Also the audio is catching leaving the video much more memorable.
